I've got a 1989 XJ with the 4.0. Earlier this week it wouldn't start for my son. I jumped it and it started fine. I figured that he had probably left the lights on while he was in school. I went out this morning and attempted to start it. It slowly turned over but soon ceased to even crank over. I tried to jump it and it slowly turned over but then, again, stopped even turning over. The battery was purchased new in June of this year and both battery cables were replaced at the same time. All the connections are clean and tight. I figured the battery might be garbage as I bought it at Wal Mart because it was the only place open when I needed to buy the battery. I've had bad luck with cheapie batteries in the past. I put another battery in and tried to start it again. The same thing happened. The second battery isn't new but I know it is good as it works fine in the vehicle it is usually in. I also put a new alternator in a month or so back and, according to the gauge, it has been charging just fine.

I'm wondering if the problem could be the starter. I've never had a starter go out in any vehicle I've ever had so I don't know the symptoms of a bad starter. Also, the ignition cylinder is a little sloppy and I just realized that the key can be removed even if the cylinder isn't fully in the lock position. Could a bad cylinder cause starting issues?

Thanks for any advice. I'd like to get this thing back on the road as soon as possible. I was planning on taking my boys quail hunting this weekend.

It's probably the starter...expensive part but very easy to replace.

Pull the starter and take it to Autozone or Checker... they'll check it for you.

Thanks for the ideas. After some more messing around with it I also think it is the starter. I tapped on the solenoid and was able to get the thing to start....only once though. I'll be dealing with changing it out later this week.
