I have a 2001 XJ which is having problems with the gas gauge. It shows what what appears to be normal usage untill it gets to the half way mark; Then it will drop to empty all of the sudden. The last time it happened $6.00 at $2.09 a gallon brought it up to almost full. Is this a bad float or is it that sensor problem that is mentioned in the recalls: cause I thought the recalls on the gas sensor was for mid 90's models.

In my 98 ZJ the gauge keeps bouncing off of empty and making the low fuel light come on. In my case the sending unit, pump, and everything else are just one device located in the fuel tank- which they want over $600 to fix. I've found that I can get a pretty accurate judgement on my fuel level by checking the trip odometer and making sure I reset it every time I fill up- and I always fill it to the top just to be on the safe side. I've heard the stuck float theory before as well but the last time I got my emissions tested the guy said that ODBII vehicles don't use a traditional float. Then again, he didn't tell me what they would use instead either.
