Are you getting air blowing out of the vents? If so, then either the heater core or one of the hoses to/from it is blocked. If there is no air coming from the vents, then it's most likely a vacuum line problem.

I'm having the same problem...I automatically assumed it wasn't the heater core because I thought the first sign that it was bad would be a leak...how hard is it to check the heater hoses for blockage?

crazy jeep Well, I have checked the water level, and the blower is functioning. I will flush the entire system, and reverse flush it , in hopes it may be a clogged line. I will let you know the results. Thanks

Today I pulled both hoses from the thermostat housing and flushed the heater core. Spraying into the top hose and out the bottom produced nothing but clear water...then I sprayed into the bottom hose and about a gallon of murky brown water came out. The difference in temperature is maybe 5 degrees give or take a couple. Still not satisfied.

Seems to me if both hoses attached to the heater core are too hot to hold for long then the issue is with the controls or various flappers. Depending on year you can see some of the actuators that control the flappers with the radio out. The flapper that controls temp may be stuck or the dial may be messed up. Some of this is run off vacuum. You should be able to hear things moving on low fan while adjusting the controls. Right now my 99 gives heat but I cannot get it to the floor. I had this issue last year and it was because one of the actuator arms slipped off. Pretty cheap design.
