I have a 97 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 88K miles. After fillup last night, got a check engine light. Saw the gas cap was open, and closed it.

Merging onto highway- very poor acceleration. As far as I can determine, truck is starting in second gear. No kickdown to first, shift selector in first and second show same RPM. Plenty of torque in reverse, so the engine is fine. Higher gears shift fine.

Tranny fluid is clean and pink, level is good.

Has anyone seen this? Any ideas?

It could be a few things. Your Jeep has a 44RE trans that're known for torque converter clutch problems. The 1st-2nd shift band could be bad or going bad. A bad shift solenoid can cause erractic shifting problems too.

Thanks for the reply. The truck makes no attempt to engage first gear- none of the traditional symptoms of a slipping band. It just smoothly starts rolling in second. No attempt to kick down into first either, but kickdown from third to second is fine. Could this be a logic or sensor problem?

I would think its a shift soliniod as well..

Most tranny shops will give you a free inspection..

Then you can fix it yourslef once you are sure thats the problem.. Mr. Green
