K, I am trying to figure exactly what I need for a 249 to 242 swap but I am having a hard time... maybe i cant do this but here goes...

I have a 98 ZJ Limited (5.9) with I assume a NV249 TC in it. Upon reading all the information found here and other forums, it seems to me that if I find a tc NP242 from a vehicle built after 94.5 it should bolt right in.

Now, I cant remember if I found anyone with teh 5.9L that has done the conversion, is this tc strong enough?, I will not be off roading(that is what my CJ is for right?)

I've got the 98 5.9 ZJ and I replaced the 249 with the 242. As for a direct bolt in- my donor came from a '97 5.2 V-8 Grand Cherokee. You would want to try to get one from a 96- newer V-8 Grand Cherokee to have the easiest install. The 242 was also used behind the magnum v-8's in dodge vehicles but I don't know if the shaft lengths are the same. Also, to retain the lo-lock feature you would want to get a 96-newer 242 but if you're not going to be putting it in 4-low then any ZJ v8 242 will do. As for strength, the 242 is a more complicated device but the 249's VC just downright sucks. I wouldn't worry about the strength of the TC, but if you're going to put the 242 in 2 high and then do burnouts then you probably need to worry about the strength of anything downstream of the 242 (like the rear differential).

A 96-up 242 is what you're looking for. Jeep used the 242 behind a 46RH trans from 93-95, and behind a 44RE trans from 96-01. The difference between them is the transmision they bolt to.

Thanks Guys...

What I needed...

Next Question....I know there is some debate about this, since the VC is gone in the TC, this version of TC allows me to just remove the front DS and the chirping/hopping will go away...

Keep in mind I live in Canada and having 4WD is necessary somtimes, so I will still be changing the TC eventually, but getting parts from wreckers here in Canada does not seem as easy as some of you guys say it is....I expect a Wrecker will ask anywhere from 5-800 for a used TC here...So I will need to look long and hard...

Thanks,

Az

Depends on what kind of shape your Tcase is in.. Take off the front shaft and see how it handles.. The worst that could happen is you ruin your VC.. Mr. Green

Good luck
