My '89 XJ with the 4.0 is having a problem with the heat. It seems to me that the thermostat may be stuck open causing the engine to not heat up to the proper temperature and leaving me a bit chilly in the passenger compartment. I live in Minnesota and it's starting to get a little cold so it would be nice to get this problem solved so that I don't have to amputate any appendages. Is 150-160 degrees the proper operating temperature? That seems low to me... Anyway, any help on this would be great. It will give me a place to start for sure. Thanks again for any help.

I'm certain that your '89 should be higher than 150 F and if you are feeling chilly that will confirm it's not your guage. Most engines are running at least 190 F thermostats. You may be right that it's stuck open. With your engine completely cold, open the radiator cap and look in. Start the engine. If the coolant looks like it flowing then the thermosat is probably open. There should be very little flow in the radiator until your engine is hot enough to open the thermostat. Hope this is helpful.

All XJs run about 205-210 degrees. Your OEM thermostat is 195 degrees.
My 1988 was running about 205 degrees. My 1991 runs at about 208-210
degrees. If you run a cooler T/Stat your gas mileage will suffer. Injection systems need the higher temps to atomize the fuel.
