I recently purchased an '89 Cherokee and I see that there is something on the ceiling of the Jeep in between the sun-shades. It appears to be broken and that's why I can't really tell what it is. Did '89 Cherokees ever come with a digital compass or something like that? Just wondering if anyone can help out with this. Thanks a lot.

If it looks like a small semicircle and dark in color (you said it's broken, so if you think it used to look like that) it's a sensor for auto door locks.

Thanks, but I know what you're talking about and it isn't that. It is right above the windshield, directly between the sun-shades. It's approximately 4" wide, 2" tall, and maybe another 4" long. Like I said, it looks like where a digital compass display might be. I didn't mention before, though, that it has a wired plug as if something's supposed to plug into it. If somebody doesn't know what I'm talking about I'll have to find a camera and take a picture of it because it's really bugging me that I can't find out what it is.

Again - Thanks for any help with figuring this out.

Is it like a little square bowl shaped thing? I have the same thing and I've never taken it off for fear of ripping the headliner...I think it just covers up the hole and wiring where a overhead console would be on a higher model.

It's not a cover, I think it is what's left of an overhead console. Does anyone know if an '89 Cherokee ever came with one? I'm not exactly sure what model mine is because the idiot who owned it before me took off all of the badges and spray-painted it matte black with a spray can. I'm pissed about that because I can tell that it used to be a very nice dark-blue metal-flake color. Thanks again.

Does anyone know if an '89 xj ever came with an overhead console? It would be really helpful to hear a reply. Thanks again.

Chrome trim and mirrors under the paint? Power seats?
Probobly a "Limited" model.
The overhead console thing on my 91 Limited has a digital compass, clock and a couple fold down pockets for garage door remote and sunglasses.
My friends think it funny to fill it with beer bottle caps to "suprise" the next person who plays with it.

Thanks for your help, my Jeep isn't a Limited (it doesn't have power seats) but it does have chrome trim. I think it is what remains of that overhead console, I just didn't know if an '89 XJ ever came with one. Thanks again.

Well, I'll share what limited info' I can remember. If you have a power antenna, then it's likely a CL-3 packaged Larado...which in fact DID have remote keyless entry whether you know it or not. along w/ power seats. However, some of the CL-2 pkg came wired with keyless entry as well. 99% chance if you have power locks, that's what it is. Both pkgs had chrome IIRC...along with the 88's. '89 was the first "real" year Chrysler was in charge of quality being they aquired Jeep from AMC in '88. Wouldn't surprise me if there are some goofy special ordered rigs out there as well though.

On another note, maybe this guy you got the rig from is a perv? Maybe he has/had a hidden camera in there and it's currently transmitting your every move? Maybe he is stalking you? Did you change the locks??? Shocked

the previous owner probobly added it in , i have a 89 sport and it doesn't have anything in the location you described .

sport has no power seats no power locks no power windows . you can always take it off and find out , or just leave it there and have it annoy you forever .
