I have a '95 Cherokee SE. My battery warning light came on recently while I was on the freeway. It went off momentarily when I was passing someone at about 75 mph but came on again when I slowed down. I checked the battery (engine off), 12.49V. Checked again with engine on and it was about 12.01V. (For reference I checked my Chevy truck, engine running and it was about 14.5V.) I took it to Schucks Auto and they tested the alt in the vehicle and said that it was not charging. I got a new (rebuilt) one, installed it and the car would start but still didn't seem to be charging. I took the car to Auto Zone and they tested the battery and alternator and said that the alt was shot. (They also said that if the battery wasn't completely charged, it would ruin the alt...sounds bogus.) While driving home from AutoZone, the car died.
Here's the question: could the ECU be bad (which controls voltage regulation) or is there something else that I should check? Or do I have another bad alternator? Thanks for the help!

I may be wrong but I don't believe the ECM controls the charge rate or the charging system on a 95. I think all the regulation is within the alt. Unfortunatly it sound like another bad alt. Take it back and have it checked.

the exact same thing happened to me . two alternators just poof died , both brand new (good thing they were free) , if the battery is exceptionally low then yes it could fry the alt because excessive load would be put on it . your alt should put out about 14.5-15.5 volts . your ecm doesn't regulate your charging , internaly regulated .

i think its just bad luck , or something is seriously shorting out . if your jeep can start itself then it probobly has enough juice to not fry your alt . those stupid alternators are week anyway , never jump some one with them . im thinking of converting to a simpler one wire alt if i dont get mine working .

im pretty sure mines just bad luck anyway .
