a general maintainence..pleaze escuse my horid spelling.. would be a new air filter get a KnK for $50, good oil change da oil filter with that, spark plugs, spark plug wires you can upgrade with bigger wires for an msd like i did if you like Very Happy, serpantine belt, maybe an optima battery, check the brakes then just lift it 7inches get armour tires winch electric fan throttle body spacer snorkel fender flares ya know all that good stuff that transforms baby jeeps into beasts like swamp boys

Right after the radiator, I'd change the transmission and differential fluid.

IF its an 84 its a cherokee.. Not a grand Cherokee.. But it could be a cherokee Chief or something like that..

But either way.. What they said is right.. Change all the fluids and the plugs wires rotor and and if it has them... Points...

Not sure if 84 had points or not..

Good luck..

That makes more sense.. Welcome ... Enjoy your ZJ...

Go ahead and do that stuff that was suggested and I can probobly think of a few more...

Check water pump .. Make sure its not weeping.. (tiny leak around the pulley..)

Check your oil pressure .. (the gauge just gives you a normal or Low reading ..)

Check the rear main seal.. That is a common problem on all jeep motors..

If the rear main is leaking its not hard to replace but while you are at it you should change the oil pump... (Why not ... It wont hurt anything)

If your rear main is not leaking .. Dont bother... It will leak eventually and you can do it then..

Mr. Green

Just for the record.. You dont want to jump into synthetic if you had that in mind..

I would suggest something like Valvoline High Mileage oil and tranny fluid..

Oh one more thing.. While you are at the store buying all the fluids and filters ... Go ahead and change the tranny filter.. And make sure you clean the magnet in the tranny pan really good..

That should cost you enough to last for a while.. rofl

Good luck..

I am using Melling high volume oil pump and for a waterpump I went to autozone and got a high volume water pump... It has 8 fins instead of 6 .. Not sure what kind it was.. Maybe ASC.. I forget...
