I recently bought a 95 Cherokee with a rear outside tire carrier. I believe it is factory but I am not certain. Mine does not lock open. It looks as if it is missing something. Does anyone out there have this type of tire carrier? I would like to know what the locking mechanism looks like so that I might be able to make it myself. I appreciate any advice or help. I love this Jeep!!!!

I don't think any cherokee came from the factory with a external spare tire carrier, but don't take my word for it.

The factory swing arms are found on the pre-'97 XJs, and consist of two mount points and a bent pole with a clasp to hold the tire in place. It takes some serious reinforcement to mount anything bigger than 31"s. I know Billy's got one here in the forum (he's been absent of late), and has a 33" mounted on his, but I don't know how he reinforced the mount points to hold it 'cuz he wheels with that thing.

What I did? Get a new trail bumper with a swing arm designed to fit large tires. You can also stick it on the top, just expect fuel economy to drop a bit from wind resistence. Course, if you lift it, then fuel economy goes out the door, and blah blah blah.....

You get the idea. Very Happy
