I had a deal on a 1980 CJ5 but as it turns out the motor was junk so I passed. I still like the short wheel base CJ but hate the carburateded 6cyl. Can anyone tell me if the CJ5 ever came with a multiport F.I. straight 6 If so what year(s). I live in California and want a legal Jeep that has some stock Horsepower.

Thanks
Chris

i know that if you were to fI your motor the easiest way to do so is the go to the local junk yard. as far as the 6cyl. are you asking if you should keep this motor. if this is in question consider this. my dad had a 79 cj5 with a 304 3 spd. his buddy had the exact same setup with a i-6. and the i6 could pull the v8 backwards. and as you probably know the offroad world relies on more torque that hp. keep that in mind

I'm pretty sure that's going to be none.

I did some Googling. According to http://www.offroaders.com/tech/jeep/engine-factory.htm, the only I6 engines used in the CJ5 were the AMC 232 and 258 engines. Those engines are the direct ancestors of the 4.0L I6, but the earlier engines were, according to the same site, never available with fuel injection.

I also came across http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/engine/fi40swap01/. A writeup about swapping a FI 4.0L into a CJ7. I don't know enough about the difference between CJ5 and CJ7 to know whether this would work the same for you.
