Can I take the back half and guts of a 242 and mount it to the front case of a 231. Would want to do this for a future trans. swap, wanted to keep the selec-trac. Is the standard 231 that much stronger than the 242? This is the start of the learning curve for me! Thanks!

i dont think the guts of a 242 will fit inside of the 231. the 231 is stronger than the 242 because it is less complesx and less stuff 2 break. unless u have a beefed up 5.2V8 or like me have a 5.9V8 i would stick with the 242.

Thanks , Haven't had the two sitting side by side yet. Had a chance for a 231 not hd that was bolted to a AW4. Was still thinking about the 42 RE swap! Think I'll stay with the 242 for now!

i beleive you can put the input shaft from the 231 in the 242 ( the 231 is 21 spline and the 242 is 23 spline ) personally i like my 242 over my 231 , nether one will hold up that great against a beefed up v8 .

the 231 and 242 are pretty much just as strong , just one has a little more to break . the 231 hd is stronger then both .

sticking with the 242 is probably the best option

yes the input shaft will be able to fit but the stuff inside like all the gears and and chains and crap like that.

BTW... how is the 231HD stronger, dose it have a heaver dudy case, or inside or what?

Thanks for that link Andy. The Novak knowledge base seems a very good resource for driveline info, particularly if you are considering swaps of some kind.

Best regards,

basically you would put the 242 in for on road traction control . the 231 if you off road and don't want that on road traction control .

that 2300 ft/lbs is also with an upgrade and that is not input that's low range and first gear . if you want to go crazy get an atlas . i can't see the 231 being that much tougher then the 242 . simply choose it for the traction control and if you decide to use it and it blows up put the 231 in . thats what im doing , my 242 is still going strong .

thats a cool website , i have never seen it before.

THe 231HD has a wide chain that's what makes it stronger
and the 231 comes in both 21 and 23 spline counts, 21's were XJ's and 4 poper wranglers, all 6cly wranglers are 23 spline
