I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 auto ltd.

The problem I have is as follows....in all selection modes of 2 and 4wd (except as below) it pulls away slowly like a clutch slip but changes gear fine once you are away. If you boot it it seems to respond much better.

It seems to get to about 2000-2500 rpm then it flies breaking loose the rear wheel.....before that its just creeping

As an aside which may be related there is a shudder from the rear and a noisy vibration briefly when you reach about 30 mph.

In 4wd lo it pulls away without the problem.

In reverse it is fine

Can someone advise where the problem might lie please??

Hi,

from what your saying it sounds like your gearbox or torque converter,
have you checked the ATF fluid in your gearbox?........

Its a little overfull, its light red/brown and very slightly niffy!!!

Just been reading about the correct fluid is +4 ,if its wong type (e.g. dextron)would this have a affect on it?

Did this start suddenly? have you lost any fluid from the bottom of the bellhousing lately? it's hard to figure over the internet espeshly if when it's run up to speed it's ok, is it pulling hard when it's as you say creeping, or is it pulling like it's in the wrong gear?................

Been like it for ages but thought I should do something about it!
tiny oil drip at the bell housing, when I say creeping its like it wont pull the skin off custard....

If you sit on a slight slope facing upward and press the throttle its like theres a moped engine pulling it then at 2000-2500 bang it flies off.

Its like the ecu is thinking dont go...dont go.....dont go........NOW GO when the revs get higher.

Ok could be your torque converter, or fluid pump in your gearbox , if it goes through the gears 1-5 i'd be looking a the torque converter. i found a link for you to read and a test, it describes your problem http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/ic60340.htm

Good point! i would say if it's your torque converter and your only getting half torque at start off in low ratio you won't notice, as 4 low is a crawler gear, and you'll have the revs up quicker, also reverse is a low ratio.......did you try the test?

I did the stall test and all was well in limits, the time taken from putting in gear to drive taking up is about the 1.5 second mark...again within tolerence.
The transmission drainback certainly reads like the symptoms but and in my mind it is a but.......... putting in gear for the first time there could be delay due to drainback, if this was repeated immidiately then there would not be time to empty the torque convertor?
No matter how many times you put ingear then out it makes no difference.

Hmmm, I've been looking at the fsm for you and it is possible to get slippage from a out of adjusted gearbox or faulty solenoid, blocked valves within the box. it shows a number of tests in the problem diagnostic section. do you have a fsm or could you get hold of one? it mentions symptoms of over full, under level, frothing of fluid, etc and numerous other tests on the gear box..........

Think I have sussed it!

Changed the oil for +4 and a complete flush, now I have no forward drive at all so I guess the box was hanging on as long as it could and is actually Knackered!

Appreciate all your help on this one!!

Oh will any 4 litre auto box fit??
