I'm not quite sure how to explain this problem but here it goes:

2 months ago I got into an accident in my 97 Jeep Cherokee in a snow storm. I bumped up against a rail at about 40mph but it was enough to somehow break my fuel pump and disconnect the 4WD shifter linkage. I was able to get those problems fixed however I am still having some trouble. Now and again (during acceleration around 40-50mph) my engine seems to suddenly lose power. At first I thought it was a transmission problem because it happens about when the torque converter kicks in but I'm not so sure now -- if this problem happens and I stop, put it into park, the engine will race up and down.

Here are a few of the other symptoms:
-Gas pedal becomes limp. I could floor it and the engine RPM wouldn't change
-I usually have to stop and put the transmission into park to fix the problem. (and that doesn't always do it)
-Engine light does NOT come on
-When it loses power, it drops speed VERY quickly and sometimes jerks forward like it's getting quick bursts of power
-If I stop and put it into park the engine will race up and down.
-Once the engine stalled out completely while I had it in park.

Any ideas? I'm really not sure where to go from here. The problem is VERY intermittent. It happens maybe once every two weeks. I am very concerned about the safety angle because the loss of power is so quick I am worried about getting rear ended. I'm totally out of ideas what to check on next.

Maybe it's a bad new fuel pump?
