All,

I have had the front pinion seal replaced 2 times and it is still leaking. I have a 1995 Cherokee Sport 4x4 with stock front axels. Is there some special trick to getting these to seal? The diff oil is coming right out of the pinion area and running down the diff case. Ticks me off. Thanks for any help.

is it leaking between the pinion and seal ? if so you probably need a speedi-sleeve .

The yoke could be worn, sometimes they get deep rings worn in them, then the fluid passes right by.

Replace the pinion yoke with a new seal and the problem is fixed.

OK, I have a new Pinion Yoke on order. I will go to AutoZone and pick up (yet another) a pinion seal when it gets here.

Due to being busy, the past 2 time I had the local shop replace the seal. Is this a hard part to change out?

I'm thinking about changing the parts out this time myself. What do I need to look for?

I wiped off all the oil and inspected the front diff. Then I took it for a 5 mile drive and re-inspected the pinion seal. It looks like the oil is seeping out between the pinion seal flange and the diff housing. It's not coming from the shaft between the yoke and seal.

I hope this fixes it. I am getting tired of cleaning up the diff oil off the driveway.

Thanks!

if its coming from between the seal and the diff housing then a new pinion is not what you need .

what you need is some one competent who knows how to install a seal unlike your past mechanics

when you replace the seal put a coating of #2 permetex between the mating surface of the diff and the seal

or

no# 3 aviation will also work

also known as black death sealant because it doesn't come off very well.

Well to to to the mix I have done three pinion seals myself.
First time was a seal , worn yoke.
Second time seal was bad.
Third time I took the yoke and used crocus cloth on the yoke shaft and polished the living tarnation out of it.
Three weeks and no leaks.
When you put the yoke back on place a little grease or lube on the seal surface of the yoke.
