Hello,

I drive a 91 Cherokee with 140k miles and I've had a strange problem. It started about three months ago when I noticed I would occasionally have a sudden loss of power for a quarter of a second while I was on third or fourth gear. It was pretty rare, and I wasn't really sure if it was happening.
The problem became serious when this started happening every time I drive on pretty much any gear. The sudden loss of power increased in duration and started to feel like momentary sputtering. Sometimes this happens when I am just getting off first gear and causes the engine to stall and I have a hard time getting it started again. No problems getting started from a cold morning. Occasionally it sputters while idling then revs itself to about 2400 rpm and goes back to 1k.
The check engine light gave error 34: Cruise Control Circuit. I wasnt sure where to start. I searched about this forum and heard the TPS sensor goes bad on many jeeps from my generation. I replaced it and now the problem is much less frequent. However it still happens. Less occasionally it stalls, but almost always when I drive it occasionally loses power to the engine for a moment then I can catch up if I rev it some more. The check engine light comes up after that happens and stays lit, but is always off when I start it fresh. I'm not sure what to check next. Any tips would be appreciated.

Clean or replace your IAC, that will help.

Mr. Orange, thanks for the response.

I continued to drive the machine and the problems in gear disappeared. However the stalling persisted occasionally at stop lights and the Check Engine light would go on as usual.

I got a Carb + Choke cleaner today, soaked the intake while engine was running, and cleaned my air filter. After about two hours I took apart the Idle Air Control sensor and cleaned with the spray and a cloth. It had alot of carbon and didnt spin freely initially. Its all better now. Check Engine isnt lighting up anymore but MAINT REQ does. I'm hoping it will be cleared within 50 on/off switches.

I took my car out for a two hour test drive and it drives pretty well. Thanks for the tip. Hope this info helps someone else.

What is the tube that connects from the top of my engine to the air filter? I noticed its pretty greasy inside.

Your welcome, glad I could help! That hose is just a breather. You can just take it off and clean it or put a small filter in place of the hose. If you install a filter make sure you block the hole on the air cleaner box.

TheBrat97 posted this pick. I have the same little red filter, but it's easier to use this pick than upload one of mine.

You can unhook your battery for a few minutes and the maint light should go off. Then if it comes back on when driving you'll know if there is still a problem.
