For the last two months ive had nothing but trouble with my 97 xj sport 4.0.This rig is completely stock. It has been in the shop for the last two months, I do get to drive it on the weekends, but its still has the same problem. The jeep starts and runs great.Evereything goes sour when you try to accelerate. Its like it falls flat on its face.Almost like there is no gas.But if you let off the throttle everything is fine.I have heard a popping noise like it is backfiring through the intake. My mechanic said it needed a new pcm. This was done(ALOT OF$$$).It was then brought to the jeep dealer to be reset.Check engine light went out and it ran good for about two hours then it started runnig poor again.my mechanic is not pulling any codes. The check engine light comes on whenever it feels like it.but the problem is there whether its on or not.Every once in a while I can kick it into passing gear and it wont just die out. This is my wifes daily driver I really need some help. This is driving me nuts. Not to mention the fact that it a little dangerous when your pulling out into traffic and it just stumbles or falls on its face.Im not a mechanic but I do know some stuff about vehicles, so any ideas I could do myself would be great.(IM RUNNING OUT OF CASH).I did change plugs, wires dist.cap, rotor button.THANKS.

HI,

I had a similar problem with my Audi , it would run ok but if i put my foot down there was nothing there ! then some times it would accelerate but when i tried to accelerate again it would act like it was running out of fuel.
I took it down to the local engine test tune up center they hooked it up to their machine and told me the lambda probe was knackered and the engine was running very lean, fitted a new one and it run great!! ......just a thought.......good luck

Have the Mechanic check the distribitor. Mine crapped out, and it gave me the symptoms of idle fine, but it whould stall out under accel. The mechanics computer should give the timing/fire signals from the computer/distribitor. If they use the graphing function it should be easy to see.

You can verify it is or is not the sensor by unplugging it. This puts it in a preset mode instead of running off the sensor. Doing this will make the check engine light come on. It could also be the CPS doing it.

Just a thought but has anyone removed the intake tube and carefully inspected it for cracks?

I had a small crack deep in one of the accordian ribs on mine that would open up when you stepped on the gas and cause the engine to buck, sputter and generally run like crap. It was a tough one to troubleshoot. Spent a ton of time replacing parts that wre ultimatly fine, it was a air leak that caused it.

HI, JUST A THOUGHT, MY XJ 2.5 SPORT DID SAME, WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THROTTLE PEDAL AND GAVE A BACKFIRE BRINGING 'CHECK ENGINE' LIGHT ON.
HAD IT COUPLED TO SNAP-ON DIAGNOSTIC UNIT AND THE T.P.S. SIGNAL WAS VERY ERRATIC, FITTED NEW ONE AND BACKFIRE DISAPPEARED, BUT THEN FOUND THAT THE DISTRIBUTOR ROTOR IS OUT OF LINE WITH THE CAP CONTACTS.
AM TRYING TO LOCATE THE SECTION IN THE 2000XJFSM THAT COVERS IGNITION SYSTEM SO I CAN PULL DISTRIBUTOR AND RE-ALIGN THE ROTOR.......

GOOD LUCK ( U.K.er)
