horrible gas mileage. check engine light on and code said it was running lean. checked the O2 censor and it is fine and the last thing I can think of would be to clean the fuel injectors. its a 97 wrangler, 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder.
has anyone ever done this for their jeep? I drove a long distance and the engine just sucked up gas never had great performance. help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

If your check engine light is on you will have codes stored in the on board diagnostics. Turn your key on-off-on-off-on leaving it on the third time. Any codes will flash in the odometer display. post them back here and someone will tell you what they mean.

How did you check the O2 sensor?

to clean up get a can of "sea foam" it is a cleaner that you can add one of 2 ways, unhook a vacum line and stick it in the bottle or some other intake system.

the other way in pour it into the gas tank...if i were u i would do both, do about 1/2 and 1/2 when u do it.

error codes were 12 and 52. I didnt personally check the O2 censors. I had it at a jeep dealer service center and they said the weight on all of them was fine so they did not need to be replaced. they also said that it was just all caused from bad fuel and if I continued driving it would correct itself, but I drove from washington to california (1000 miles) and I still have the same problem.

I also tried "sea foam" actually on the long distance trip and it seemed to work for a while but then the problem came back. not sure what to do.

If the codes are the same as for the XJ, then code 52 is "Oxygen sensor stuck at rich position". Possibly an intermittent fault, and that is the reason it tested OK once?

Code 12 is "Battery or computer recently disconnected" and can be ignored.

I notice you haven't posted your mileage. I guess like my '97 4.0 TJ yours is now getting on a bit mileage wise. My MPG dropped when my O2 sensor went bad. That was at 63k miles. It's a good idea to change the sensor anyway when you get to around 100k. Do you know if or when yours was changed as it could well be your problem. Just the upstream one. The one at the cat just tells you if the cat is functioning correctly.
