Need some help here. I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee, 6 cyl. Recently my rear-hatch locking mechanisim has been sounding faulty. Well, last night, it stopped working altogether. When I push the remote unlock or the switch on the drivers door, I hear nothing in that area happening. With that in mind, I am unable to open either the rear-hatch or the rear window. I have tried the mechanical latch inside the rear-hatch but that just seems to move up or down freely (not sure if that is how you use it).

Can anyone point me in a direction to go. Do I need to remove the inner panel and possibly replace the latch?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I had to replace my latch in my '93. The plastic inner mechanism cracked. I'd suggest removing the inner molding on the hatch, and take a close look at what's going on. The part at the junk yard is pretty inexpensive (I think I spent no more than $5 on mine).

My 95 ZJ latch became inoperable several years ago. I took the panel off the inside and was able to figure out where the disfunction was, made the repair/adjustment and it has worked perfectly ever since then.
