OK so my WJ i making this weird knocking sound in 2 wheel drive, and it is speed sensitive. but when i put it into 4 low or full time 4 wheel drive the sound goes away. so my question is, do i need to replace the transfer case or is it something else. and if i do need to replace the TC what would be a good upgrade. any info will be GREAT. thanks for all the help.

Check the u-joints on the rear driveshaft, they could be shot. Maybe putting it in 4wd is taking some load off and joints so you don't hear them in 2wd. Explore all possibilities before going at the t-case.

I've solved a lot of 4x4 drivability problems by doing the following tests...

Check trans, x-fer case, and axle fluid levels first.
Check all greasable suspension and drivetrain componenets.
Check front and rear wheel bearings, check brakes, exhaust, etc.
With 4 jack stands (on level ground) put the Jeep up on all 4's. Have someone put it in gear and 'Carefully' free-wheel it in 2wd while turning the front wheels back and fourth. Look and listen for loose and/or worn parts.
Crawl under the Jeep, have someone put it in gear, and listen for noise in the x-fer case, axles, trans, etc with a mechanics stethoscope, or a piece of heater hose with a bolt in one end. Free-wheel it in 4wd H, and 4wd L.

It doesn't cost anything to look at, and listen to stuff. Sometimes it turns out to be something stupid, sometimes. Good luck.

be EXTREAMLY carefull when u have all 4 tires up and off the ground and u free wheel it, i have heard many stories and actualy seen a car fall off the jack stands and drive into a wall due to the interia caused by the wheels starting 2 turn. if i were u, i would jack it up and have it faceing away from any walls, trees, cars, ect.
