I went to check my transmission fluid level today and noticed it looked a little brown instead of the usual red. i don't remember overstressing the tranny but who knows. i was going to change the fluid but have heard stories of people having transmission problems after they change there automatic trans fluid. For a little info I have a 97 XJ sport I6 4.0 4x4 auto trans. I am just about to hit 167K and im not sure if the fluid has ever been changed either. What are some precautions to take or does anybody have advice from previous experience? Also what type of fluid goes in it?

Are you going to flush out the trans? Because there's a lot of fluid you won't get out of there if you just open up the pan and let it all come out. You're torque converter is still full of it, the lines, the radiator, all the valve body etc.
