I donno if anyone else here is farmilar with the Halo series of video games (also books, short films etc) but if you are you will surely know about the games iconic vehicle: The warthog.... It a 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steering vehicle which seats two with another standing in the back operating the machine gun... The vehicle is also unique in its awesome suspension... There are no visible axles instead the vehicles wheel mount on what appear to be solid steel members and the drivetrain is routed down through the steel members (presumably. The steel members travel at an angle (backwards from the front wheel and forward from the back) and are mounted to some sort of shock absorsion device so that as the vehicle goes over bumps the wheelbase changes a bit as the angle of the steel members change... So why am I talking about it like a real vehicle even though it is from a game which takes place 500 years in the future?

Well apparently the future it now:

Yep... Its a fully functional Warthog built by WETA studios (the folks that gave as the special effects for LOTR and are working on a series of short, Halo related, films. I don't know anything more about the specs but it looks AWESOME and I want one... I'll post more info if I can find it.

im not supprised that some one built it.

its not brand new 1 month old technology,

the US military has been running set ups like that on test vehicles like that for a while, proably a bit less than 2 years

they power comes from electric motors that are housed inside of the rim.

BUT THAT THING IS SICK!!!! I WANT 1!!!

I don't THINK this perticular vehicle uses hub motors but I have been dreaming of a high torque high peak horse power electric offroader (using some high efficiency AC motors of a type we are helping to develop where I work and some of the new high peak current nano-polymere batteries from altair or a123 systems one could potentially build the ultimate offroader... Think low center of gravity (motors are located in each wheel), perfect wieght distribution (put the batteries wherever you want), no drivetrain exaust or transmission and INSANE horsepower (I am thinking 1500 or more peak power for 10 seconds and 500+ continious from a vehicle that weighs in at under 3000lbs)... Granted the batteries are still expirmental and the motors even more so (only a few motors of the size I am talking about have been constructed and) and the contoller would have to be a custom design utilizing IGBT power transistors but if I ever had a few million burning a hole in my pocket and some connections at those companies...

Still even if the warthog was just a regualr gas/diesel vehicle... Damm I would love to have it... In the game the vehicle is powered by a fairly puny (for the future.. LOL) hydrogen engine... Its top speed is like 55mph

Remember it may be a game but its kind of realistic: Millitary hardware IS built by the LOWEST bidder after all.

I am sure they one they built goes faster than 55 if it has a normal engine and even CLOSE to normal gearing...
