I recently bought a 98 XJ 4.0 auto and it has NEVER started the first time and rarely the second time but always starts, even at alltitude. It doesn't matter if it is hot, cold, sat all night or just turned off. The dealer gave us a fuel pump to put in which firestone did but we were told that XJ's have a "Fuel Pump Module." They put the fuel pump in and ofcourse no change.

1. is it worth replacing the new fuel pump with the complete module?
2. Can I replace just the "module" part?
3. Is this doable for a very amateur mechanic?

According to Firestone no relevant codes on the computer. They did a vehicle inspection and all related parts (i.e. spar plugs etc.) were fine.

The module contains the fuel pump, fuel gauge sensor and fuel filter.

When it does finally start, does it run ok? If it does, it might be something in the fuel system...but it sounds like something more sensor related to me.

When you turn the ignition on (don't try and start it, just turn it on) you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds. That will be a good indicator whether the pump is bad or not. The next thing you can do is check fuel pressure at the rail. It should be around 49psi. If it is, then the problem is most likely not fuel.

Good luck.
