Hi all - new person here, I just bought a '92 Cherokee. Lotta miles, but it's clean and that 4.0 engine just pulls and pulls.

I have a funny question, and can't seem to find any prior threads on it here.

When the gauge gets to 'E', and the light goes on, I fill the tank... and it only takes about 12 gallons - which is about right, cause I got 200 miles on that much. Then the gauge doesn't quite go all the way to full. Just seems odd, cause it's supposed to be a 20 gal tank.

Now, this vehicle was in an accident sometime in the past, and the rear was rebuilt a bit, so it might have gotten an undersized tank... unlikely, but possible.

I guess there could be an issue with the sender, or the gauge - probably more likely, but it doesn't seem to be a common problem with these. That's the great beauty of places like this; I can find out the common problems and the ways others have fixed them.

Or maybe there's some sort of filler / vent issue? Maybe the baffles are preventing me from filling it all the way - I read somewhere that Jeep limited the fuel on another model (YJ?) by using the same tank but putting the spout in low.

Get under the Jeep and check to see if the tank is dented. Also pull out the sending unit and take a look at it to see if it is damaged. If the sending unit was removed when the prior owner had the rear fixed, it could have been put in wrong!

Still having this issue, and I'm deciding it's related to filling. A few times I've sat at the pump and by going slowly, or rocking the vehicle, I can get 14 or more gallons in. The gauge reads a bit higher too.

Otherwise the gauge works normally, and I don't see anything obviously wrong when climbing around under there.

So, I'm thinking either the fill tube extends too far down into the tank, or there's some venting issue. Guess someday i'm gonna have to pull the tank off.

In some of the early xj's they used a 14 gallon tank, could be they used one of those as a replacement for the wrecked one.

this is going on with my girlfriends 92 xj. she used to be able to fill it full. but now at the pump it clicks as if its full at about 3/4. and you have to finagle or keep trying to get a little bit more in at a time to fill it as much as possible.

this sucks on long trips because we have to keep stopping earlier than expected to refill to 3/4.

any thoughts on what this could be would be appreciated.

I don't remember where I read this and do not know if it is true, the 14 gallon tank and the 20 gallon tank are the same, it is the depth of the filler tube that determines how much gas the tank will hold. If I remember the article correctly the filler tube is adjustable and sometimes it slips causing the 20 gallon tank to become a 14 gallon tank.

This is true!

But, I don't remember if this applies to YJ's or XJ's?
