Ok... I am finally taking the plunge and buying a new axle for my Jeep.

I called a salvage yard a (U pull it typ place) that said they have a 2 dr 4x4 explorer and I can have the complete rear end for $200 if I pull it myself... This is cheaper than anything else I have seen (the other U pull it in driving range wanted $250 and everywhere else wanted $350+).

I did not even ask what the ratio is because I am putting in 4.56 gears and he did not know if it had LS or not but that does not matter either because I will be putting a lock-rite in anyway... So my question is: Anything else I need to ask about it or look at before buying it?

(I am already planning on checking if it has disk breaks cause he was nto sure of the year but he thought it was a 95-96 so it should be ok)

Thanks

all ford explorers had disk brakes, and it dose NOT have a limited slip becasue it was in a 2door explorer, which means it had a V6, and only the V8's had limited slips...and because it had a V6, it has 3:55 gear ratio in it.

btw, the reason i know everything about exploders is becase i own one.

no u shound not need to check anything else.

All explorers did not have disk brakes but all I think all of them since 97 do..

I am pretty sure the 96's where still drum ...And also .. Explorers with the v6 did come in different ratios that 3:55 the Explorer I solid axled had 3:73 gears and a 4.0 ..

I think the tow package came with 3:73's and the Eddie bauers all came with 4:11's .. (But Eddie Bauers where all 4 door..)

I honestly cannot remember .. I think it was an option on everything newer than 95 but became constant on the 97's . But I may be wrong..

I do however know that I found an 8.8 in an Eddie Bauer Exploder with the V6 and it had 4;11's. I found this, just this morning .. It is in my buddys garaged gettting cleaned up then I am going to go and weld the brackets on .. It will be installed by this afternoon.. Ill try to get pictures..

Just as a side note.. If yours has drum brakes (like it probably will) you can get a set of disks off of a retired police cruiser.. (They tend to be all over the bone yard to..)

Good luck..

Hmm... I might do that if he will take $150... Otherwise I will just look for one with disks.

BTW: I have been told the 8.8s off a Mustang or Crown vic will not work but I am wondering why not?

Because they are 29 spline axles.. They are slightly better than the 35 but not nearly as good as the Explorer 8.8.. Howerver the brake components on the other 8.8's will work on the Explorer axle..

i wouldnt say and everything related. a mustang 8.8 is a 28 spline not a 29 spline. i have learned alot from swampy but you made an error on this one.
i just switched hobbies from the mustangs to my xj.

I think the point was, the spline count is different than the axles from the explorers. Are they not?
