But I did search out and read all the others.

Well here is the question.

After doing some searching today I came up with two 242 cases, both are pulled from a 96 ZJ. I noticed on the output side for the rear shaft there was a rubber fitting instead of the metal that the rear shaft slides into. Is this going to have any effect on the installation? Or do I have to swap over the metal cover?

The ZJ that it is going in is a 98 with the 5.2. Also not new to jeeps here this is ZJ number 3, first with the 5.2 and Quadra-Trac though. First two ZJs were a 96 and a 97, seems like I am sticking with the same color though...

Really want to get this done as I miss my Selec-Trac, hoping to get the case tomorrow and in by tomorrow night barring any unforseen problems.

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

P.S. Have the walkthrough bookmarked.

It sounds like it may just be the seal. Some look different than others.

So Here I am with the Cases ripped apart... Got lucky and found a free 249 out of a 94 with a shot VC. At the point where I am about to take the Shift forks out of the 242. Had to come back up here and read the part on how these things come out without breaking. I was wondering if it is possible to put all the 242 components in the 249 case... swap everything pretty much... The 242 case has seen better days as it is out of a 89.. no cracks or anything in it... just for a newer case.

Well to anwser my own question about the 249 case... it looks doable if you have a gear puller handy... which I didn't... RTV is setting up as I type this... almost ready to go in...

Question about the 4x4 lights though... which sensor do I need to make it work? The one on the 242 only has 2 pins... the 249 has 4 (correct me if wrong) and it doesn't seem like the 249 sensor goes in the same hole.

Hope to have this in within a few hours... one can hope.
