As far as i know someone replaced the rear axle on my ZJ before i had it and i need to replace the bearings something fierce. the problem i have is that i dont know what number it is i.e 35, 40, 44 etc. i checked the chart in the tech section of the site and according to the gasket chart it seems as though it would be a 35, but im still curious because in the chart below there arnt really any notes about a ZJ axle at all. there is a tag on my diff with a whole slew of numbers but none of them make sense or indicate which axle it is. I think the ring gear is 8.25" because i measured and all i could tell was that it was bigger then 7.5" (i was in a time crunch and had to get it assembled so i could drive it home Evil or Very Mad ) if anyone has some info that could help i would greatly appreciate it! thanks!

p.s thanks for the help with the DW too its all gone! so now i can focus on the insanely loud noises coming from the rear end Mr. Green

im sure some one will say im wrong but .

i replaced the bearings in my dana 35 (my xj) and some in a 44(a friends zj) , both at the same time and they used the same bearings anyway , the 35 shafts were just machined down more at the splines . in fact i put the 35 ones in the 44 because i ended up needing offset bearings for my 35 .

best thing is to take a picture of your rear end and post it up .

That is a d44. Put a magnet to the main housing (not the cover), if it sticks it's a 44 if not it's a 44a! Can you read the numbers on the tag? If so, post them too! They should contain your gear ratio.

hahah, rear end... im glad there is such comraderie between us jeepheads that we can laugh at stupid stuff like that. Mr. Green but yeah im quite sure that its aluminum because when i had the cover off before to do some inspecting of my gears and what not i was checking the backlash and tried to use a mag-base on the tool to get an accurate reading but it didnt stick to the actual case so i had to rig up a steel plate with two holes in the end and bolt it into the case and use it as a base for the magnet. it was funny !!! but thanks alot i really appreciate it! but now i know its aluminum and a dana 44 is there something special i need to do or just get the same stuff i would for a steel d44?

again thanks alot man! Mr. Green Mr. Green

I'm not sure if the parts are the same. I know I tried to get a cover gasket for my buddy's 98 with a 44a and the gasket they gave use was way too small. It was for a 44, not a 44a. So I just used rtv to seal the cover.
