I have noticed that the part-time light on my 88 cherokee will go out if i accelerate quickly. when i let off it comes back on.4.0 with auto trans.thank you

The switch reads off vacuum so when the vacuum pressure changes the
light will go out. Of course the light should go out when in 2wd.

If the XJ has the vacuum disconnect front axle, then yes, the switch is vacuum operated together with the axle. On later model XJ's the switch is mounted on the transfer case and mechanically operated.
Having said this, it does sound that the OP's XJ does have the vacuum system. Those of us old enough to have driving cars with vacuum operated wipers recognise the symptoms; basically the wipers wouldn't work when going uphill.
On the other other hand, the XJ system is supposed to have a vacuum reservoir and check valve to deal with this problem, which suggests that the OP may have a problem with his system.
Note that the light going out may or may not indicate that the axle is disengaging. It depends on the amount of vacuum needed to operate the axle vs. the switch.
