whats the best way to get the harmonic balancer off?

ok i have a 93 jeep grand cherokee and im having trouble removing the harmonic balancer so that i change the crankshaft front oil seal. SO i got the six bolts out of the pulley got it off cake but the big nut on the balancer is being a PITA! the haynes says to use the have a friend use a screw driver and the starter to keep it still but i cant really figure this method out.. if there is a better explaination of how to use this method or better yet a differant way im all ears and would love to hear. thanks a bunch

an impact will work just fine or if you remove the starter and use a rod or srew driver in the little notch on the side of the fly wheel it can be done with a ratchet or wrench. then a harmonic balancer is needed to totally get it off

i believe it mean they want you to get a breaker bar on the "big nut" and have someone jump the starter solenoid (with the key off) so the motor turns and the starter torques the bolt off for you? with the key off the motor wont actually start, but the starter will crank it

definitely not . like good idea , but it could hurt alot .


impact gun or jam a bar in the teeth of the flex plate . and then get a puller . a big dead blow hammer usually breaks the balancer

Electric impact available at any home improvement store will work fine for this and other things in the future..

But I would personally use a sawzall.. rofl rofl

my electric impact was to long to fit.....
