33s on a locked 35 is not a good idea. If you cant find a 44 shoot for an 8.25, they are comparable in strength to the 44

Welding the tubes and putting reinforcing plates will do little to help. The weakness of the D35 are in the thin axle shafts and the tendency of the housing to flex.

A D44 is the best choice in terms of direct bolt in options. If you go with an 8.25, remember that not all of them are the same. The pre 97 8.25 axles are not much better than a D35. You'll want to find one from a 97+.

When you say pre 97 do you mean the 27 spline version?

another good choice would be an ford 8.8 out of explorer its a 31 spline axlewhich is really stong itsabout the same width and if you buy the superior 88 kit you elimintate the c clip and get chromly axle shafts for like 500 bucks

but on the dana 44 one out of a cherokee would be the best....ive also heard of people using dana 44 out of izuzu on there cherokee's an people using them out of the FSJ just remeber google is your friend

Ford 8.8... From an explorer.

They are good axles and from 97+ (I think) they have disk breaks already installed.... Also you can get one with limited slip if you feel like saving money on the locker (you can add it later depending on what kind of lockr you are getting if I am not mistaken)

ummm yeah about that....

i dont care who you are or what you think you know about an 8.25 vs. a dana35 yes the 97 and up 29 splines are stronger than the 27 spline but there is no way in hell the 27 is anywhere close to a dana 35 i have a 97 and i traded my29 spines for 27 because i didnt want the lockers available for the 29 spline. i can tell you now that the 27 splines are stronger than the 35 by a good amount. and i bet no one in here wheels harder than i do and i have all the dents and breaks to prove it and not a single one of those breaks has been my 27s on 33 in claws.

sorry about the paragraph i just need my 2 cents in there

in my opinion your best bet would be a 44 out of a Cherokee. dont go the route of the honda or the Isuzu's because you have to go through a ton of crap to get them to work for you but they are a true 44 good and strong. bad thing is the price of a 44. you can get a 8.25 for about 200 bucks cheaper and that would make up the price of a locker or gears

oh and the 8.8 is a good strong axle but it is a little narrow and you will have to buy spacers. and im fairly sure that the limited slip only comes in the v8 version of the explore

as long as its an 8.25 before 97 it should be a 27 and make sure that it is an 8.25 im not to sure when they started putting the 8.25 in the Cherokee. just make sure that the bottom of the housing is flat.

97 and up 29 spline

96 and lower 27 spline

dana 44 was in the year 87 to 89 and has a more pointed bottom to it

35 is rounded
