It should be high pinion

lakeland, spend more time reviewing your posts. You say go no high than 4.10 I would go 4.56 thats confusing and contradicting what you advised

If you wheel a lot go 4.56 if you run the highway and have it as a DD, then 4.10, if you plan to go to 35s 4.56

4.10 is higher than 4.56! That doesn't seem contradicting to me.

Jeepin419, 3.55's would be the lowest gears you could run with your stock carrier. Anything lower, you will need to replace the carrier, as well as ring & pinion. 3.55's would be alright, but if your going to regear, you should get 4.10's or lower. You never know, you may end up offroading more and want bigger tires, then you'll be all geared up!

numerically higher or numerically lower? Yea, confusing. Since is a DD I would run 4.10s especially since you are planning 32s

4.10 is a higher gear then 4.56. As the numbers go up, you are actually gearing down.

If you are going to regear, put some thought into it. Like Fox and Orange said, 3.55 is the cutoff point. So when you regear, you might want to consider future plans for the Jeep. For example, if you are going to change the carrier, you might want to go with a selectable locker. I will say this...you will hate 3.55's and 33's with a stick...5th gear will become useless as a shrub and while 4th gear will pull you down the highway, you are going to turn lots of RPM's doing it. 3.73's will not be much better...

How many miles do you plan to do daily? Are they mainly highway or local roads? Since it's a stick, 4.56 would work well...but keep in mind that big heavy tires and low gearing on a D30 exposes a problem with housing flex...even with 4.11's. When torque is applied, the pinion shaft tries to push the ring gear away from itself. That causes the pinion to ride up the gear teeth which flexes the carrier and the housing. There are ways to strengthen the housing, a good thick aftermarket cover for example, but the point is there's a lot of things to take into consideration. Wink

Nice response Phantom

What I meant by confusing was, not everyone knows that a numerically higher number for gear ratios are actually a lower gear. So his post was confusing

I would not go to the dealer. Not when you can pick up used D30 3.73's dirt cheap. Pre-2000 TJ's all have the same HP D30 as your XJ and lots of them came with the 30" wheel and tire package, which had 3.73's. As people regear their TJ's too, I would cruise the Jeep boards and post up in the Wanted sections...someone might just give them to you.
