Just today I noticed that when i was going 55 or over my xj would just vibrate and shake violently. I know snow and ice on the tires and wheels can cause this, but I'm not entirely sure. I can't think of anything that I did to it to break something or damage it. Oh, on my way to school I didn't notice any vibrating, but on the way home is when I first noticed it. Any suggestions of what might be causing this would be great.
Thanks

A little details on vehicle?

Is it lifted?

I had tremendous problems with Death Wobble - mine was result of loose Track Bar and its associated drop bracket loosening up.

This would start at highway speeds when hitting a bump, pot hole etc. One side would shake and it would get progressively worse instead of settling out as you would expect. ONLY way to get it to stop would be to slow down then all was fine until next pot hole.

Had to change my shorts a time or two though! VERY UN-NERVING!

I recently replaced drop bracket and added optional Bracket cross brace (wish I had known to install it originally). I also installed a Steering Box Brace too.

Possibly a result of my previous problems, I have just discovered my stock motor mounts are shot! I will be replacing them soon along with rear transmission mount.

Check to see if EVERYTHING is tightened to torque specs (reference FSM).
Look for worn tie rod ends, ball joints etc.

But most people seem to report issues with Track Bar.

Steering Stabilizer gets mentioned a lot but a good steering stabilizer will NOT correct for other problems! (My Opinion)

Report back on what you find so that everyone benefits!

Jack up and support front end with good set of Jack Stands.

Push. pull and tug on each front wheel to see if uni-bearings are shot.

Look for worn tie rod ends, ball joints etc.

Check tires to make sure they are properly inflated, haven't lost a weight, and/or have them balanced.

Check to see if EVERYTHING is tightened to torque specs (reference FSM).

Last resort replace steering stabilizer but see my previous post.

Let us know what you find?

Check the axle side trackbar mount. It's known to loosen up over time and miles.

Recently had a similar problem with my Cherokee. I had it all looked over, and they said the front tires were 'cupped'. It's a slight uneven wear along the length of the tire every 8 inches or so. Right around 45-50 mph, it would go just fast enough to create a resonance bouncing, and the darn truck would wobble left and right, making it feel like the darn tires are gonna jump off the lugs. I finally bought 4 new tires, and problem solved, never happened again.

For an easy solution, rotate the tires, or at least put front tires on the back and vice versa, and see if that works. No cost for the experiment, either.

check the tire pressure first , clean everything out of your rim . just think those tiny little 2 oz weights balance your tires imagine a pound of ice . i would then get them balanced a weight could of fallen off , w.e .

next check suspension components .

One day on my way to work I heard a loud band under my jeep, when I hit the railroad tracks a couple miles down the road the front end shook so violently I thought it was coming out from under the truck...I got to work and the damn track bar was hanging out from the axle because the bolt fell out.

ey well it seems it was just ice and snow on on the tires, it's been a few weeks now since it shook that one time, but everything seems to be working out fine now.
