Was down the beach the other day and when placing the tranny in either 4H or 4L, it would not engage even though the the shifter worked and looking under, everything was shifting fine as well. Yet, the was no 4 wheel engagement. I have taken the transfer case off the jeep and did notice it wa very low on fluid, yet when moving the input or out put yokes, everthing seemed to move alright, though there was no pressure on the system. Would the low oil keep the gears from engaging or do I have other major problems. Thanks for all y'alls help.

Check the axle disconnect motor on the front axle. If the diaphragm is bad the 4wd won't work

axle disconnect motor on the front axle? I'm sorry, not sure what disconnect motor part you are talking about. Could you give me directions of where I should be looking, is this in the Transfer Case? Thanks for your help on this.

Finishing installing a new Transfer case with new eliminator yoke tonight, will test tomorrow, if it does not work, will have to have a look at what you have said. Thanks for your input,
Charles

Seems you were right, still not engaging front wheels. Have read that this is a major fault in the system, that this vacuume engagement goes out all the time. Looking into installing this cable engagement that everyone is talking about, any ideas on this matter? Actually lost engagement in all wheels their for a little while, heard a grinding of the gears, had to get the transfer back in neutral to get engagement back. Also, curious what others have their transfer case set at when driving on pavement, neutral or 2H?

Just a thought:

Are you sure it isn't just the linkage?
Fairly common issue I think. (I don't have YJ though).
