Why the 8.25??

There is a metal tag on the axle that will tell you the ratio.

Look under the Cherokee section sticky's and you should find your answers Wink

The 8.25 is stronger than the 35

I hope he wants to swap the 35 out for the 8.25

A little bit better choice would be a newer 8.25 since it would have a wee bit larger axles (1.21" vs. 1.17") but I assume you have already have this one available to you?

Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96

Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01

Reference the Cherokee Spec's Sticky - a bunch of good info there!

Yes, that swap will work. The driveshaft may need to be shortened. Measure the length of your driveshaft, and the donor Jeeps shaft if possible. Otherwise you won't know till you have the new diff in place. Like Billy said, check the tags for axle ratios. Chance are they are both 3.55's.

Look for a Dana 44 on an XJ first. Sometimes you get lucky and find them. I have found 2 in a yard.

If you do decide to go 8.25, go with one out of 97+. The 96 and prior 8.25's are not much stronger than a D35.
