Anybody on this site do a gear swap to go with larger tires tell me how it works for you with a 2.4L. I see a lot of the 2.5L guy talk about there rigs and seem to be happy with what ever they chose to go with. My problem is, im not sure exactly what gear to go with, or which size tire to move up to. Probebly because im kinda new to the jeep world, one day i like the way 31's look, the next i like 33x12.5's or 33x10.5's or ill say skip all that because i like 32's better. Ill probebly just stick to mostly DD street use for now, and maybe some light trails if i can locate some in SW, PA. I just dont want to slap some 33's on, when 32's or 31's would have a better choice shock (Oppinions Please)

I can't help you with the proper gear ratio until you decide what tires you want to end up with. With a 4 cyl, you'll max out your lower gear ratio available easily. The lowest you can go is 4.88 in a TJ with a D30/35 combo (what's standard on an SE). That's all that's available. You'll want that low of a ratio with 33s to get the most out of your rig.

I'd still go with the 4.88s.

I might just go with 4.88's and a super 35 kit, and slap some 33x10.5's on and be done with it. I do believe i like the way the 33x10.5's stay with in the flares, and how they fill out the wheel wells much better than the 32's do. Im kinda tired of beating dead horse so ill move on.

I'm a little late to this discussion, but what the heck....

Assumptions made.....

215/75X15 tires should be about 27.7 inches tall.
33 inch tires should be 33 inches tall
Overdrive in you 5 speed is 0.80:1
Rear end gears installed from the factory are 4.10:1

These calculations were made using the "Speed versus RPM Calculator" located here:

http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_speed_rpm.htm

Your Jeep came from the factory with 215/75X15 tires. These tires are approximately 27.7 inches tall, which should result in an engine rpm of 2800 at 70.2 mph, assuming you have 4.10 gears.

Changing to a 33 inch tire with 4.88s should result in an engine rpm of 2800 at 70.4 mph.

You can see that theoretically, even with the 4.88s you will never be able to attain an overall ratio as low as the factory. However, for all practical purposes, the 4.88s and 33 inch tires will result in performance equal to the original factory configuration.
