the only thing I can think of related to a radiator hose may be the trans cooler... i know if a trans gets hot it doesnt like to shift

tranny fluid is normally a reddish color and it's hard to explain what it smells like. if you have red fluid in your coolant your transmission is probably about to go bye bye

it would smell burnt if it overheated . it would have to over heat a lot . if the atf is brown then the clutches could be worn out . or it could be normal really .

I would have him check the transmission cooler lines. It's possible one got bent/kinked when the hose was replaced...especially if it was the lower hose that blew.

Since the AW4 is electronically controlled, did he try disconnecting the battery for an hour or so to reset the ECU? Is the check engine light on?
