Hi Jeepers, I've just bought a '95 2.5td with 100k on the clock. From the first time I tried to start it after I'd got it home (150 miles) I had a problem with the starter. It doesn't always engage with the ring gear. At the first attempt to start it whirred away without cranking. On second attempt it cranked and started the engine. It's got progressively worse to the point that it needed 3 or 4 attempts before it engaged with the ring gear and started cranking. Then it took 6 or more attempts before cranking. I've now parked up awaiting investigations for fear of getting stranded somewhere unable to start. I deduce that it may be a worn starter pinion or worn/broken ring gear. It looks an unholy job to get the starter off so before I start; could this be something simpler? Is there a quick fix?

I would pull out the starter and have a look. It's easier than it may look. Disconnect the battery, then remove any wires attached to the starter. After that it's only two bolts holing it in. The starter is probably no good. But, inspect the flywheel to make sure all the teeth are intact.

Thanks for that. Is it really that easy. From above the turbo's in the way and from below there's the engine mounting. I foresee a lot of bad language!

I'm not exactly sure of the setup on a deisel. The starter is usually accessed from below.

you could remove the mounts that are in your way and support the motor with a jackstand, just dont use the oil-pan as a support spot.

Thanks. Where's the best place to put the support. I would usually put a block of wood between the sump and trolley jack, but I'm not familiar with htis car.

Well I had a good look at this over the weekend - if I start on the beer now, when will I be ready to start the job?
