Hi all..
Hope everyone enjoyed / survived the Holidays.
Jeep is messin' with me again. Been running perfect... but... now...
... all of a sudden......

The 60amp fuse (fuse box, under hood, passenger side.. forward most fuse) keeps blowing. When I replace it... the guage comes up to about 12-13 volts... lasts about 30 seconds...then burns out fuse. Burnt 3 fuses in a row.
By time I pulled over and checked fuses.... battery was already quite low.. 11.2 volts.

New large battery. Alternator recently checkout fine. As soon as the snow stops, I'll go have it checked again. Connections all look fine... recently cleaned.
This happened on road. Made it home on battery alone... barely.. 10.3 volts remained.... charging overnight.
I recently went through most of system.. upgraded lighting harness.. works wonderful for a month now... so.. don't think that is it... all connections re-checked and ok.
Ideas ?
Will tear into it later when snow stops.
Thanks

I would look for a frayed wire or any wire that me be shorting out the system. When did you get the alt. tested?

Just had system (Battery & Alternator) re-checked at Auto zone, this morning. Battery checked out with engine off. Everything checked out with engine running... with and without all of the lights, rear window defroster, fans, etc running.

Could it be (theory here) // that in the storm.. with everything running heat, rear defraust, wipers, headlights, on pair of 55watt running lights... that i over used what the alternator could produce... wore down the battery to almost nothing... and then the Alternator had to push TOO HIGH of a voltage/amperage (which regulator should not have allowed ?) through the system... blowing the 60amp "Alt Power 1" fuse ??
Sounds thin..... but ... everything looks good now with the battery all charged back up.
I'm at a loss.
Appreciate any ideas.
thanks
Kit

Still may be a possibility of a wire hitting somewhere? That's weird that it blew 3 60 amps and now it's fine! Confused

Yes... very strange.

I've looked through it.. nothing seems out of place. The only thing different is that I charged the battery up, over night.

I took it out today and abused her a bit.... 4 wheeling in snow... bouncing around... everything running to add load... nothing... just fine.....
Got me.

When I have some nicer weather, I'll go through it better... see if I can find a suspect connection or wire.

A friend suggested taking out or otherwise checking the connections under that fuse box, that sets under hood on right fender/wheel well. Maybe corrosion ? Worth a shot. I hope it's not an ugly place to go ?
Jeeps !! They're just as strange as boats or humans. LOL
Thanks
Kit

check the ground straps. any system that isnt grounded properly will cause a fuse to blow. a lot of times as the vehicle ages the grounds are either overcome by surface rust, or simply vibrated off, if this is the case simply reattach the ground to a different location.

I have a 91 4.0 as well and stopped charging yesterday, popped in a new battery to get home, today I am taking the alternator in to an alternator/starter specialist I have used before. On the phone he said the voltage regulator is in the computer on anything chrysler after 90. he said it was not the best place they could have put it. hopefully its just the brushes. I do agree with the ground straps. On other cars I have owned, a blown headlight switch has made for some really odd gremlins.

It turned out that It was my 60 amp fuse as well, being cautious i brought the alternator in anyways, it was almost at the end of the brushes. additionally the TPS was toast as well. After replacing the fuse it drove fine, but i replaced the alternator, tps, and cleaned the contacts and grounds, so far so good.
