The cruise contol on my '98 Cherokee is no longer working properly. It has slowly quit functioning. A year ago it worked perfectly. Then, about 1 out of 10 times, it wouldn't turn on unless I first pressed cancel. But if I pressed cancel and then the "on" buttom, the cruise light would come on, but it still wouldn't engage.

It has slowly worked less and less often, to the point that now, it will only work 1 out of 20 uses (ignition starts). The only time it works properly is if I press the on button and it comes on immediately. But now this almost never happens. The weird thing is that I have found that if I press the "on" button 4 times, the cruise light will illuminate on the 4th press. But it still won't engage. Or, if I press the cancel button before "on", the cruise light will illuminate but still not engage.

So, if anyone has had similar symptoms and figured out the problem, please help me out. I have checked every connection under the hood and checked all the vacuum lines for leaks, but they all seem fine. Is this most likely my ECM, or the bottons on the steering wheel?

I had my mechanic check it out when he was working on some other problems, but thanks to Murphy's Law, he couldn't get the stupid thing to not function perfectly. Sure enough, it worked fine for a day after I got it back, and then it started to glitch out again over a period of about a week.

Mine is a bit older (92) and may be much differnet but after chases my tail on the vacuum side of things I found a bent (doubled-over wire) in the steering wheel turn signal mounted cruise control switch and I just cut and spliced good wire back together vs. pulling new wire down steering column.
