I've got a '98 XJ with the 4.0L six and auto tranny. It's started making a noise in what sounds like the rear diff. It's most noticable while decelerating around a right hand curve. The noise is kind of a wahwahwahwah <- like that's going to help.

Anyway, it's just developed a new problem, but I don't know if they are related. It will shift into 4WD fine and it works, but it doesn't shift back into 2WD when I move the lever back down. I have found that if I move the lever into 2WD and then apply the parking brake while I'm moving, it will shift out of 4WD. This makes me think that there's some slack in the drive train. Where would I start looking for problems? And what would I look for?

Thanks for any suggestions.
