hi, have 96 cherokee sport,
got passengers side wheel in the air and while spinning came down hard with traction...not long after this (5 min) noticed grinding sound from rear diff, Embarassed
on attempting to turn to the right i noticed the right rear wheel didnt want to turn...was draging and skipping as i attempted to turn.
I placed in reverse and a loud BANG followed after approx 2m in reverse from diff..
then grinding and all else was gone?...back to normal,
i thought...well was till i used selectrac ..was fine for hours then the grinding returned( only in lock ) normal 4x4 fine...
once back to 2wd was perfect again...what have i done to the diff..ty
and ..love this site Very Happy

I'm guessing side gears or ring and pinion. Either one, you need to pull the diff cover and have a look inside.

I also would suggest pulling the cover and inspecting the gears.

96 Sport... Dana35 or Chrysler 8.25?

It does sound like the ring or pinion got 'splodered....

Fortunately, replacement axles that match what you have should be pretty common, and you can even upgrade to stronger if it does turn out to be the gears. Popping the rear diff cover and looking inside will tell the take. Pretty metal shavings or whole teeth is not a good sign.
