I was in a quandary trying to decide whether or not to swap out the D35 on the XJ with an 8.25 that was available. Everybody was telling me the 8.25 was stronger so I decided to do it. I started having doubts when I found out the 8.25 has an open dif and my D35 is limited slip. Another issue with the brake line caused me to do some more research on the web and my google search came up with http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xjstockspecs.html.

This page told me that the c-clipped 8.25 I had (93) actually has a smaller axle shaft than my non-c-clip D35. That on top of open vs. limited slip and Phantum's comment this past weekend about the availability of aftermarket parts for the 8.25 was enough for me. I decided to put the D35 back in which in turn solved my other issue with the brake line. An added bonus is the vehicle isn't bastardized so ordering stuff from the counter at Autozone won't be a circus act. Wink

Thanks Phantum!

Now is when somebody comes back and says the shaft size was a typo and it's actually 2"

What was the issue with the brake line? Does it have ABS?

the body bracket for the rear brake line where the flexible tube connects to the hard line on the 93 Cherokee has a hexagonal hole in it that matches a hexagonal end on the flexible line going to the axle. The 88 has a round hole in that bracket. The hex shape was too big for the round hole so the holding clip wouldn't engage into the slot.

Hey Jeff, I know this is a old post but what about a 8.8? I can get them cheap and I know what brackets you need to complete the swap and the brake line issue is an easy fix. Im doing a swap in the xj for the wife this winter just for the disk brakes an LSD.

OK, I'll bite:

How Cheap is Cheap?

I'd like the Disc brakes more than anything else. Drums makes a hard breaking situation a little scary!

My 8.25 does ok with my 32's.
