I have a 97 TJ 4.0L with AC that all of a sudden stopped send air out the upper dash vents. The air only exits defrost or lower floor/heater vents. When I switch the selection lever between lower and upper vents there is a very loud "clunking" sound, like the vent door trys to move or hits something. I've checked all the posts here about vacumn lines but they all seem intact. Is the vent door broke? Hard to fix if so? Real novice here.

it is most likely a broken shaft from the damper to the air solenoid. i found mine broken with exact problem. clunking noise at different times while driving. i have no idea how to fix it though. i assume the whole dash has to come apart and vent system taken apart as well. i have to fix mine yet. the solenoid is located behind the dash controls .

good luck

The HVAC controls on Jeeps are vacum controls. Check at the intake manifold on the engine and check and see if there is a vacum hose loose or leaking. I had the same problem and the hose was off it's connecting nub. Put it back on and used a very small cable ty around it and it's been working fine ever since

It is most likely the arm for the door that is broken. The fix is simple. Getting to it isn't. You have to remove the dash. Then you can use a screw an super glue to reattach the arm. I believe there is an article in a past JP magazine that details this.
