Hey gang. I 've been going through my "new to me" 99 XJ changing fluids, filters, and all the other stuff that's probably been neglected. I also got a factory service manual, and if I read it right the ONLY fuel filter is a combined filter/pressure regulator that mounts on the fuel pump module and requires you to drop the gas tank.

My first reaction is "you gotta be kidding." Is that really the only fuel filter? Is it just a strainer, or is it a paper filter? I assume that I should replace it after 120,000 miles, but if its just a screen maybe not.

On my '93 XJ there was a fuel filter bolted to the inside of the driver's side "frame" rail, close to the fuel tank. The filter in the tank was indeed just a strainer.

That's exactly how my wife's 93 Eagle Vision is. But this 99XJ is decidedly different. I'm a little annoyed that Chrysler combined something disposable like a fuel filter with something expensive like the fuel pressure regulator. That's the kind of bullsh*t engineering I expect from Honda or Toyota pissed But so far that's the only disappointment I've had with the truck, so I'll live with it.

In all my days of building imports and domestics its the domestics that are always engineered to require service and high parts prices. I have dealt extensively with Honda's in the past and most jobs can be performed in under half the time, spending under half the money as would be on my domestics. Granted my Jeep is a lot better than my Ford in this aspect but still faaaaaaaaaar worse than any of my Honda's. But yes that is BS engineering.
