1986 Cherokee Pioneer, NP207 Transfercase.

I was climbing my way up a pretty rough trail this afternoon and as I appoached the top of the hill in 4-Hi, 1st gear, a knocking sound started. I could feel it too.

Ka-kunk, ka-kunk, ka-kunk...

It was pretty loud, definitely a noticeable thing!

I heard a similar sound a few weeks ago while climbing a steeper hill in 4-Lo, 1st gear. However, it was very faint then.

The 4WD seems to be working fine, haha... I was amazed that I made it all the way to the top. It was a quad trail.

I could not get the 4WD to make the sound again when I tried it on flat ground. It seems to only occure while climbing hills.

There's brand new fluid in the t-case...

Any ideas on what this might be?

The Jeep is as stock as can be.

Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated. Thank you -

Tim

All the U-joints look and seem fine.

I haven't heard any odd sounds since then.

Hmm...

Is there a simple way to check? Probably not.

I head some quiet grinding in 4-Hi 1st gear yesterday, but after engauging 4WD in reverse, then going forward it quit.
