for an 06 tj can i change the speed-o gear to compensate for larger tires or is it electronic?

Depends. You didn't supply enough information. Rubicon or non-Rubicon? Non-Rubicon will still use the speedometer gear that you can swap out. If it's a Rubi, you need to get an electronic converter like the Dakota Digital or Superlift TruSpeed. The dealer can also recalibrate it within certain specs if you've regeared or added different sized tires.

Also, if you have a SYE, it uses a tone ring. at least mine does.
