On a 1977 CJ7 do you have to have the carb on a spacer? What is the best Carb for the 304 V8? And can anyone tell me why the carb floods out and acts like it is not getting enough fuel which mkes it chug under a load?

The Motorcraft 2100 is the stock carb on many 304's. It is a very desirable 2 barrel carb.
When you jump on it, if your engine has a lag, then takes off, your accelerator pump could be in a "lean" condition.
If you jump on it and the engine stumbles, then takes off, the accelerator pump could be in a "rich" condition.
If this is the carb that you already have, it might not hurt to rebuild it.
Dont know if the spacer is necessary...

The spacer is necessary. It performs at least 2 functions. 1st, it is an insulator. 2nd, in raising the carb and therefore increasing, even minutely, the distance to the intake runnners, it helps to atomize the fuel/air mixture. User the spacer.

'Black Betty'
is running an AFB 'Black Stallion' (whoop de friggen do) after the AFB clone went up in flames a couple of years back. Ive been suspicious of Edelbrock AFB clones ever since.
