Check the shaft between the gear bpx and the steering column.
:ower steering shaft. my 88 finally wore out at 366,000 miles.
Its about $110.00 from Quadratec. The best way to check it , is with the engine not running have someone turn the steering and watch the shaft
and wheels. With the engine not running their is more stress on the steering which will show the worn parts.

Jack up the front end to check the balljoints and wheel bearings.

You could watch the shaft but you may notice nothing at first. Center the steering wheel and the wheels. Have someone turn the steering wheel
and see the position of the front wheels. Do this with the engine not running. If you notice that the steering wheel has made two or thrre full turns and the front wheels have not moved it could be the lower steering shaft.
