I know we all have horror stories about dealerships, but for your safety, heed this message:

DO NOT GO TO ZEIGLER JEEP IN SCHAUMBURG, IL!

I took my Jeep in to get a rear axle seal replaced, and they said I needed a new axle housing ($1700). Sooo, after driving it for a week or so, I took it to my mechanic for a second opinion. Turns out Zeigler's bozos CUT MY AXLE AND LIED ABOUT IT. Yes. They cut the axle to put a seal on. Due to crappy warranty issues, I took it back and they replaced the axle and "fixed" the leak. Oh wait...they didn't. It still leaks. IDIOTS. A Jeep dealer that can't repair Jeeps. Only go there if you like people who lie about making mistakes that can KILL YOU.

They cut through the bearing and put a very deep gouge into the axle itself insuring that it would never seal. They then replaced that with a very pitted and rusty reman-ed axle which also had no chance of sealing. They didn't check the diff fluid level either cause it was wicked low. Absolute idiots. It is sad that customer satisfaction and safety are taking a backseat to low wages and total ineptitude.

It was a 44. Turns out the dealership put in a very pitted and rusty re-manufactured axle that had no chance of sealing. Now it has another 44, so I am going to take the old one back to the dealer and get another new one, just because. It's still under parts warranty, and I have the parts so...
Maybe I'll accidentally drop it on a few chargers on my way in. oops.

Sounds like pretty good grounds for a lawsuit to me.

I have seen this before as well. They need to cut into the race then hit it with a chisel to split the bearing in order to remove the it, but most shops will try to cut all the way through which leads to the axle being ruined. Make a deal with them. It is cheaper to get a pair of aftermarket superior or alloy axles than to buy one stock axle. See if you can get them to pay for them to compensate for there low wages and total ineptitude . rofl

sure sucks about the situation, but i don't understand the dramatic "they tried to kill me" rant. hope they at the minimum give you a new axleshaft to make up for their shoddy work.

I agree with addict, Thought they might want you to prove that they did it, but if in fact they do fess up to there act of fu*king up, the hit them up for the axle of your choice, or a lift kit, something to make them think twice before comitting the bad "cost cutting" practices again, and then as an insult to them, have somone else do the install at there expence.
Tall order...yes, but it's cheaper and less time lost for them, then a legal battle.

Ya know the really weird part is that they cut anything. The dealers are supposed to be Pro’s and that would have meant that they use a press. To remove any of the components from the axle.

You should really take your Jeep to a specialist when It comes to that. Also make sure there is not a lot of people there. Sometimes they cut corners to save time Sad .

I had the same EXACT problem when I took my Jeep to a local shop. They said they would not do it because the housings ussually go bad and they dotn replace them.

You know what really sucks?
My friend took his XJ to get all new brakes at pep boys. They put new Master cylinder and all components, calipers lines. etc.

Well they did not bleed the brakes and when he tried to stop the jeep kept going he pulled the handbrake as he was going in the instersection slammed by a turning bus. He almost died. THis happened in tampa bay florida. He just got 10k for his injuries from the insurance company and he is going to sue Pep boys.

BE HAPPY IT WASNT WORSE!
I am glad they did not kill you Wink Razz
