2001 cherokee, 79,000 miles

im getting a sound from the rear end. i hear it between 45 and 60 mph

my first thought was a wheel bearing but its not the typical roaring sound i would associate with bearings

its more of a mild whistling sound that does change with the speed

any idea or places i should look before i take it to a shop?

tires are new, probably 10K miles

thanks

Could you give me an idea of how costly a job it is to replace?

How would a shop diagnose this

Im not familiar with these parts.... Does the sound i describe indicate some impending sudden failure or can this be ignored for some time etc.....

Any info regarding ring and pinion would be appreciated. Thanks

what we would do is pull the diff cover to see if the hardening is coming off the ring gear. if there is you will need to change the R&P quickly. with that coming off your R&P could grenade. if you need a new R&P i would suggest replacing all of the seals and bearings and be prepared to replace the axles as well. where the axle seals rest the hardening could have came off there too.
its better to do them all at once because you will save on labor. the axles will have to come out to change the ring and pinion. this would also be a good time for an axle upgrade. i would suggest Precision gear and alloy usa axles.
total job should be about $1000 per diff.

hope this helps

Pull off you diff cover and have a look inside. Check for any visible signs of wear. Inspect the diff fluid for contaminates or metal particles. When is the last time the gear fluid was changed?

thanks guys. a shop will have to diagnose. i dont have the tools or space.

i dont know when the gear fluid was changed. not in the 4 years i have owned it. i put very few miles on it so i have not thought about changing it out. i will have it done asap

im not quite understanding why i am only hearing the sound between 45 and 55 mph.. its very faint, not quite a whistling sound

i recently replaced the front u-joints. sounds nothing like the sound they were making...which was a rusty sounding squeek

Do yourself a favor and pull the cover to have a look inside. Snap a pic or two of the gears and post them here for us to look at. Pull the axle shafts if you're mechanically inclined and check them out. What does the shaft look like there the bearings and seals make contact? How are the bearings and seals? Any leaks? Do you have the right amount of fluid in the diff?

If not the diff, can you narrow down where exactly the sound is coming from? What does it sound like exactly? It's hard to diagnose a sound over the internet.

I have a very similar sound that occurs between 45 and 55 when I accelerate only in 5th gear. It too seems to be coming from the rear.
Personally I'm just going to drive my Jeep into the ground. But of course, mine is also 15 years older than yours and its running on 5, maybe 5 1/2 cylinders. Poor thing...
